‘The Shining’ Opera: Listen to the Complete Minnesota Opera Adaptation
Art and Experience: One of the most famous adaptations of Stephen King’s novel “The Shining” is Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 film starring Jack Nicholson. The horror film has cemented itself in movie history and become an all-time classic. Another rendition of the story was created this past May and premiered at the Minnesota Opera.
“The Shining” opera, composed by Paul Moravec with libretto by Mark Campbell, became a sensation, selling out and garnering critical rave. To celebrate the production’s success, Classical Minnesota Public Radio in cooperation with Minnesota Opera have released the complete audio of the live performance for fans to stream.
The opera can be heard on Classicalmpr.org and will be available for a limited time only, until November 30. The opera follows more closely to King’s original story, as opposed to the film which held some significant changes that King wasn’t pleased with. The site also gives a scene-by-scene guide to accompany the music to give listeners a better understanding of what’s going on.
