Art and Experience: Photographer and filmmaker Seifollah Samadian and film distributor Mohammad Atebbai have personally named a single tree near the Hotel Thermal in Karlovy Vary after the world-renowned Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami.
Samadian and Atebbai are in the Czech city at the 52nd Karlovy Vary International Film Festival to promote “76 Minutes and 15 Seconds with Abbas Kiarostami”, a montage film made by Samadian.
“After our arrival in Karlovy Vary, Atebbai and I stumbled upon the tree and he said that Kiarostami really loved it,” Samadian told the Persian service of ISNA on Wednesday.
“Atebbai said that he [Kiarostami] used to sit under the tree enjoying the shade and the beauty of it when he came to Karlovy Vary,” he added.
He said that they remembered several stories about Kiarostami’s affection for single trees at that the time.
“That day, in a bizarre action, we named the tree after Kiarostami without official authorization from the municipality of Karlovy Vary,” Samadian joked.
Kiarostami, who also was prominent poet and photographer, died of cancer last year on July 5 at the age of 76.
He featured trees in his photograph series including “Trees in Snow” and “Trees and Crows”.
