Fajr Intl. Film Festival to honor Abbas Kiarostami
Art and Experience: The 35th Fajr International Film Festival will pay tribute to the legendary Iranian artist Abbas Kiarostami during the festival, which is scheduled to be held in Tehran from April 21 to 28, Kiarostami’s close friend Seifollah Samadian says.
Samadian made the remarks at a press conference held at the Iranian Artists Forum on Wednesday to elaborate on the programs of the Image of the Year Celebration set to open Sunday.
“Secretary of the festival Reza Mirkarimi has asked me to hold a ceremony in honor of Kiarostami,” said Samadian, who is the secretary of the celebration.
“Several meetings have been arranged during the three-day program with those who have collaborated with Kiarostami in different projects to talk about the master,” he stated.
The poster of the festival has also been embellished with a selection from Kiarostami’s photo series “Snow White”, which focuses on winter.
A winner of the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1997 for his “Taste of Cherry”, Kiarostami died last July at the age of 76.
Samadian also added that the major exhibition of the 14th edition of the Image of the Year Celebration will also open in honor of Kiarostami, featuring a selection of his works during the festival in April.
“We will also hear brief speeches from Kiarostami’s friends during the opening ceremony of the celebration on Sunday, while ‘76 Minutes and 15 Seconds with Abbas Kiarostami’ is scheduled to be screened,” Samadian said.
“76 Minutes and 15 Seconds with Kiarostami” is a montage film made by Samadian himself. The title of the film refers to the duration of Kiarostami’s life, 76 years and 15 days, and shows a picture of Kiarostami as a filmmaker, photographer, poet, graphic designer, video artist and even a carpenter.
The secretary gave further details about the Tassvir Film Festival, a new section of the celebration, and said that all the films that have received awards in different Iranian festivals will go on screen in this section.
The celebration will be running until March 10 at the forum located on Musavi St., Taleqani Ave.
